Fist was one of our first "show dogs." He joined the family in 1986, after being unable to handle life as a show dog and kennel dog. He was very insecure and timid and couldn't handle the stress of dog shows. He also needed the one-on-one time and attention that comes from being someone's "special boy" and companion. Although he was scared of his own shadow at first, he gradually began to flourish and become more content. It was fun to watch this full-grown german shepherd go through his puppyhood all over again. The first time he barked was hilarious, because he nearly scared himself to death. And it was a riot watching this big clumsy dog learn how to play with toys. We tried to get him back into showing, but he didn't like it. So he was allowed to retire and just be "daddy dog" to the cattle dog horde. He was also a fantastic therapy dog and was wonderful when working with someone who was afraid of dogs - after all, he was as afraid of them as they were of him. Over time, he became much more confident and even saved us from "bad guys" who were trying to forcibly enter our home. Talk about a moment of pride!! Fist died of liver cancer in 1992 and is still missed. There's probably never been a sweeter, gentler soul than his.

A rare picture (sorry it was clipped out and had to be mofied) showing Fist in the conformation show ring. He didn't like doing dog shows, though, so he was allowed to retire and just be my buddy. Fist was a wonderful "daddy dog" to Jaz. As time went on, he was the perfect alpha male for raising all my crazy cattle dogs. His wonderful combination of sweetness and strength are still msised.
